शिव को महाकाल Mahakal क्यों कहते हैं - शिव महापुराण की उत्तराद्र्ध के 22वे अध्याय के अनुसार दूषण नामक एक दैत्य से भक्तों की रक्षा करने के लिए भगवान शिव ज्योति के रूप में यहां प्रकट हुए थे। दूषण संसार का काल थे और शिव ने उसे नष्ट किया अत: वे महाकाल के नाम से पूज्य हुए। तत्कालीन राजा राजा चंद्रसेन के युग में यहां एक मंदिर भी बनाया गया, जो महाकाल का पहला मंदिर था।
